The story of Focus starts in the late sixties with the Dutch version of the musical Hair. Thijs van Leer, Jan Akkerman, Martijn Dresden and Hans Cleuver were engaged as the pivotal part of a nine piece orchestra to perform the musical accompaniment for the shows. Van Leer, Dresden, Cleuver and Akkerman are to be heard together for the first time on the Dutch Hair album.

There exists 2 versions of the Hair LP. This one was distributed as a club edition for 'Boek en plaat'.

As Focus achieved success the "In and Out of Focus" album was re-issued in 1973. This is the US pressing, without "House of the king" and "Sugar Island".
